Extra care

What is extra care?

Abbeyfield's mission is to provide the best service of care and housing for all our residents, and to be a champion for older people.

Under these proposals Nonsuch Abbeyfield is offering 23 units to Epsom and Ewell Borough Council for allocation to older people at Affordable Rents. These proposals are supported by Surrey County Council Social Care team, the NHS local commissioning team and 18 local doctors.

What is Extra Care? - "Extra Care" housing is a form of sheltered accommodation designed and equipped to provide all of the services needed to care and support people as they grow older. An extra care home allows its residents to

  • Remain independent in a home of their own
  • Enjoy retirement by living life to the full
  • Feel secure within a safe environment
  • Be part of the local community
  • Be supported by professionals and volunteers, with personal care available as and when they need it.

Who does this affect? - The need is not simply for those who cannot afford housing and are dependent on the Council to help them find Affordable housing. It is also for those who rent or own a home but have modest financial resources and cannot afford to buy a privately developed "Assisted Living" retirement flat. The fact that many in the borough own their own property does not mean they have a viable alternative.
